TEHRAN (IQNA) – Iran’s Arbaeen Headquarters has made necessary preparations for serving more Iranian pilgrims visiting Iraq’s holy sites during Arbaeen this year than the previous year, an official said.

Hassan Palarak, who is in charge of the popular contributions committee of the Arbaeen Headquarters, told IQNA that the number of pilgrims is expected to rise this year and that there is readiness for serving all the pilgrims.

He also said that 60 percent of Iranian Moukebs (resting places with special facilities and services for pilgrims on roads leading to Karbala and Najaf) will be set up inside Iran and the rest will be in Iraq.

Arbaeen marks 40 days after the martyrdom of Imam Hussein (AS), the grandson of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and third Shia Imam.

Each year, a huge crowd of Shias march toward Karbala, where the holy shrine of Imam Hussein (AS) is located, to perform mourning rites. Many of them also visit Imam Ali’s (AS) holy shrine in Najaf.

In the past few years, around 20 million pilgrims from all over the world, including Iran, took part in the mourning ceremonies in Iraqi holy cities marking Arbaeen.

This year, Arbaeen falls on Tuesday, October 30.
