TEHRAN (IQNA) – The Iranian Cultural Center in China organized a Quran reading session at the Islamic Association of China in Beijing on the occasion of the holy month of Ramadan.

According to the website of the Islamic Culture and Relations Organization (ICRO), the program was held on May 13 with the participation of Abbasali Wafayi, Iranian cultural attaché in China, and Adel Khani, deputy of the center.

Seyyed Hamidreza Moqaddasi Dastjerdi and Ali Khoshnoud Masouleh, two Iranian Qaris dispatched by ICRO’s International Dissemination Center, and two Chinese seminarians from the association recited verses from the Holy Quran in the program.

Addressing the program, the deputy of the association stressed the need for boosting Iran-china cultural relations and said that every year the association hosts top Iranian Quran reciters dispatched to China in cooperation with the center.

The holy month of Ramadan, which began last week, is the ninth month of the Islamic lunar calendar. It marks the most special of all occasions for Muslims. It is a celebration of the descent of the Word of God, the Quran, from Heaven to the earth.

Fasting during Ramadan is one of the pillars of Islam. Abstaining from food and drink, and from other bodily pleasures, is a crucial element of the observation. To partake in the blessings of Ramadan, able-bodied women and men, also girls and boys who have reached the age of religious observance, are required to fast for the duration of this month.

At the end of each fasting day, Muslims break their day-long fast with an “Iftar” meal.

Ramadan is more than abstinence from food and drink during the hours of daylight. It is a time for contemplation, devotion and remembrance of God, especially through the reading or recitation of the Quran.
