TEHRAN (IQNA) – Like previous years, a delegation of Iranian Qaris will take part in this year’s Arbaeen pilgrimage in Iraq, an official said.

Hassan Mohammadi, managing director of Iran’s Union of Quran and Etrat Institutes, told IQNA that the delegation will comprise 40 top Quran reciters.

It will also include Inbtihal and Tawasheeh (religious singing) groups, he noted.

Mohammadi added that a specialized council will select members of the delegation.

He added that those who were part of the delegation last year will not be sent to Iraq this year in order to give an opportunity to others as well.

According to the official the delegation will organize 40 joint Quranic programs with Qaris from other countries during Arbaeen.

Last year, members of the Iranian Quranic delegation held various Quranic programs in different cities of Iraq during the Arbaeen pilgrimage.

They were organized in the cities of Najaf, Karbala, Samarra, and Kadhimain and in Moukebs on roads.

Moukebs are resting places with special facilities and services for pilgrims set up on roads leading to Karbala during Arbaeen pilgrimage.

Arbaeen comes 40 days after Ashura, the martyrdom anniversary of the third Shia Imam, Imam Hussein (AS).

Each year, a huge crowd of Shias flock to Karbala, where the holy shrine of Imam Hussein (AS) is located, to perform mourning rites.

In the past few years, around 20 million pilgrims from all over the world took part in the mourning ceremonies in the Iraqi holy cities marking Arbaeen.

Arbaeen will fall on Saturday, October 19 this year.
