Ghadir Annual Festival Underway in Najaf

TEHRAN (IQNA) – The eighth edition of the annual Ghadir international festival has been organized at the holy shrine of Imam Ali (AS) in Najaf, Iraq.

 

According to the website of the Astan (custodianship) of the holy shrine, the opening ceremony of the festival was held on August 25 with the participation of representatives from the Astan, Shia Endowments Office of Iraq and Egypt.

The speakers in the ceremony highlighted the virtues and importance of the Ghadir-e Khumm event and its status among Muslims.

A large number of Shia Muslims and pilgrims of Imam Ali’s (AS) holy shrine, officials of the holy shrines in different parts of Iraq and representatives from the offices of Shia sources of emulation have participated in the international program.

The flag of the holy shrine was raised at the Kufa University on the sidelines of the festival.

The event of Ghadir, or Eid al-Ghadir, is celebrated by Shia Muslims around the world every year. It is among important feasts and happy holidays of Shia Muslims held on the 18th day of Dhul Hijja in the lunar Hijri calendar.

It was the day when according to reports, the Holy Prophet (PBUH) appointed Ali ibn Abi Talib (AS) as his caliph and the Imam after himself following an order from God.
