TEHRAN (IQNA) –  A prominent Iranian Qari attended a Quran recitation session at the holy shrine of Imam Hussein (AS) in Karbala, Iraq.

According to the website of the Astan (custodianship) of the holy shrine, the program was held by the Astan’s Dar-ol-Quran Center with the motto of “Martyrs of Imam Hussein (AS) Path”.

A number of top Iraqi Qaris, including Adil al-Karbalayi, Mustafa al-Ghalebi and Falih Zulaif were present at the Quranic session.

Also attending the event and reciting verses from the Quran was Iranian Qari Karim Mansouri.

The Quranic session was held by the Astan to commemorate those killed in a stampede in Karbala on the day of Ashura (September 10).

In the incident, 36 people were killed and more than 120 were injured.

It was the deadliest stampede in recent history during Ashura commemorations, when hundreds of thousands of people converge on the city, about 80km south of Baghdad, every year to mourn the martyrdom anniversary of Imam Hussein (AS) and his companions in the 680 Battle of Karbala.

The deadly rush began when part of a walkway collapsed during a procession, causing mass panic among worshippers.
