Pomepo on Monday announced abandoning of the US four-decade-old position that building settlements for the Israelis in Palestinian territories is “inconsistent with international law”.
The US top diplomat, a former CIA chief, claimed the decision would help strengthen the US position in its Mideast initiative, authored by Trump's son-in-law and senior advisor Jared Kushner.
Al-Azhar in a statement condemned the move, describing it as a clear violation of Palestinians’ rights.
It also stressed that Pompeo’s remarks were against international laws and United Nations resolutions.
The statement further referred to other wrong US policies regarding Palestine, including recognition of Jerusalem al-Quds as the Zionist regime’s capital, and said such moves would have dangerous consequences.
Al-Azhar also called for unity among Muslim and Arab countries against Israeli occupation.
