TEHRAN (IQNA) – A major Quranic ceremony in Morocco was called off amid concerns over the spread of the novel coronavirus.

The ceremony is annually held in early March by villagers in Chtouka, Ait Baha Province, west of the country.

It has been postponed by Morocco’s Ministry of Youths and Sports to due to fears over the spread of the coronavirus.

The ministry said in a statement that the week-long ceremony will be held at a later date to protect the health of the participants, many of whom are Quran reciters and memorizers.

First detected in Wuhan city in central China in December, the virus has spread to more than 100 countries.

The global death toll is around 3,800 with more than 100,000 confirmed cases, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).
