TEHRAN (IQNA) – Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei attended a mourning ceremony marking Arbaeen, the 40th day after Ashura, which marks the martyrdom anniversary of Imam Hussein (AS).

The program, which began at Imam Khomeini Husseiniya (religious center) in Tehran at 10 AM, included recitation of Ziyarat Arbaeen (Arbaeen supplication).

Also, elegist Meysam Motiei recited elegies in mourning of the martyrdom of Imam Hussein (AS) and his companions.

The program was aired live on TV channels and website.

More than thirteen centuries ago, Imam Hussein (AS) was martyred along with dozens of his companions during a last-stand battle against the tyrant of the time, Yazid I.

Imam Hussein (AS) is consequently a highly-venerated figure remembered not only among Shia Muslims but also among Sunnis and people of other faiths.
