Located at the Desert Park along Al Dhaid road, the Islamic Botanic Garden which contains plants mentioned in the Noble Quran and the Prophet Muhammad’s (PBUH) Sunnah, is one of the series of projects chosen to grace the celebration of selecting Sharjah as the Islamic Culture Capital for 2014.

This garden serves as a science park ingrained with all plants mentioned in The Noble Quran. The efforts of several years —Dr Sheikh Sultan Bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, has been keen on  collecting and studying these plants — were crowned by bringing 50 species of plants, 30 of them are mentioned in the Quran.

The plants vary from annual and perennial to bushes and seasonal garden. Among them are palm, saffron, ginger, figs, olives and many more than those mentioned in The Noble Quran.

Indoor, there are plates identifying the verses in which these plants are mentioned. It is here you see verses such as Q 34:15, (Surat Saba’); “There was for Saba’ in their dwelling place a sign: two gardens on the right and on the left. Eat from the provisions of your Lord and be grateful to Him. A good land [have you], and a forgiving Lord.”

Then verse 16 (Surat Saba’) “But they turned away, so We sent upon them the flood of the dam, and We replaced their two gardens with gardens of bitter fruit, tamarisks and something of sparse lote trees.” For the palm and pomegranate Almighty said in Chapter 55 verse 68 (Surat Ar- Rahman): “In both of them are fruit and palm trees and pomegranates.”

The garden also includes a section comprising 42 different species of plants that have been mentioned in the Prophet Muhammad’s  (PBUH) Sunnah (Traditions or sayings/ahadith) among them are black seed, arak, saffron, cactus and mustard.

Two plants that have been mentioned in the Quran and Sunnah were excluded, one of them is the Zaqqum tree, which grows in Jahanam (hell), and some other tree which is not grown anywhere except in Palestine.

The Garden serves as a wake-up call to ponder in the verses of the God and the miracle behind mentioning these plants in the Noble Quran.

Besides, it is a cultural heritage that enhances the scientific efforts in different plant and biology fields, in addition to providing an appropriate environment to facilitate linkages between the Islamic cultural heritage and biodiversity.
