TEHRAN (IQNA) – Egypt’s Dar al-Fatwa said translating the Quran into sign languages for the use of the hearing-impaired is allowed.

Answering an inquiry about whether one can translate the Holy Book into sign languages, the Dar al-Fatwa said there is no problem.

It said, however, that the translation should be in line with the original Arabic and Quran interpretations.

Sign languages are languages that use the visual-manual modality to convey meaning.

They are expressed through manual articulations in combination with non-manual elements. Sign languages are full-fledged natural languages with their own grammar and lexicon.
