IQNA – There is a phrase in the Quran that underlines that even the slightest disrespect to parents is not allowed.

Islam attaches importance to respecting one's parents

The Holy Book says in Verse 23 of Surah Al-Isra:

“Your Lord has ordered you to worship none except Him, and to be good to your parents. If either or both of them attain old age with you, do not say: ‘Fie on you’, nor rebuke them, but speak to them with words of respect.”

The phrase “do not say: ‘Fie on you’” bans any form of insult, disrespect and negative reaction to parents.

According to a Hadith, if there was anything slighter than “fie on you”, God would mention that.

So no matter what parents do or say, one must not show a negative reaction because they have made sincere efforts for us over the years.

The verse also forbids rebuking, chiding and yelling at parents.

Children should not neglect to serve their parents or pass on the responsibility of taking care of them when they are old. In old age, parents should be in the family, talking to their children and grandchildren, telling stories, and living a happy life.

In the last part of the verse, God stresses the need to talk with parents gently, kindly, and respectfully. Of course, as parents get older, they may say things that children may not like. But no matter what happens, children should respect their parents and always speak to them with kindness. They should remember how their parents patiently and kindly answered their repetitive and boring questions.
